Day Sixteen, Part One: Lesson on Liberty

After a beautiful day on the beaches of Cape Cod, Tuesday we were headed into the City of Boston for some sightseeing, good food and a Lesson on Liberty.  We packed our umbrellas...to keep the rain away!  Hurricane Matthew was working its way up the coast...Would we be lucky with the weather two days in a row?

Even though accidents had delayed us by 45 minutes...we made it through heavy traffic into the city by 9:15.  Our tour was at 10:00AM, so we had some time to explore Boston Common, the main park.

This is called Parkman Bandstand.  It's where musicians play public concerts.

This is a monument to the Boston Massacre.

It says, "In honor of those who fell..."
Six people died that day, when British soldiers fired on a crowd of protesters.

This side shows the tragedy.
If you look closely, you can see the soldiers with their muskets, and the dead on the ground.

This is a monument dedicated to World War I and the people who helped lay mines in the North Sea.
Over 56,000 mines were laid!

Finally, it was time for our tour.
Our guide was dressed as a British regular, or "Red Coat".
He taught me about their uniforms, and how they wore trousers instead of short britches,
and how they got rid of the triangle hats for more practical round ones.

This is the Park Street Church.
During the War of 1812, it was used to store gun powder.

I got to visit the Burial Ground where...

...people like James Otis, "the Spark of Liberty" and...

...Paul Revere were buried.
I learned that Paul probably never said "The British are coming",
since everyone in the Colonies were British themselves!

This is a monument for Samuel Adams, one of the most important Sons of Liberty.
Sam Adams was good at convincing people to support Independence.

The Green Dragon is where the Sons of Liberty met to plan things like the Boston Tea Party.

My visit to Boston had lots more to it, like a visit to the Hard Rock Cafe...

I'll tell you more about my Boston Visit in Part Two!

TO BE CONTINUED...
